In Newcastle Rugby League Cessnock has beaten Kurri to stay in third spot, while Maitland’s win over Central saw the Pickers leapfrog the Bulldogs into the top five.
At Toronto, the Scorpions needed a win over Souths to claim the minor premiership but the Lions had other ideas.
Two early tries put the visitors in front.
Macquarie hit back as Jarred Edwards scored out wide, before Mick Moran gave the Scorpions hope with a try under the posts.
But the depleted home side couldn’t hold out, as Chris Knight ensured Souths would qualify for the finals.
