Former Newcastle Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy has apologised for a birthday cake blooper, which has sparked plenty of debate on social media.
Mr McCloy is seen smiling with his cake – a brown paper bag surrounded by $100 notes.
In a statement, he said “what occurred at my surprise birthday party was a case of bad judgement made by one of the guests who provided the cake.
“I am fully aware of the seriousness of the current ICAC investigation and its ramifications. I sincerely apologise that this has occurred.”
The photos were originally shared on the Lucky Hotel’s Facebook Page, a hotel owned by Mr McCloy, before being deleted.
The ICAC heard Mr McCloy handed bundles of cash in brown paper bags or envelopes to two Hunter MPs, who later resigned.
