The NRMA is calling for urgent action to address a $360-million backlog of road repairs across the Hunter.
A new report, released by the motoring lobby group, reveals that $3.2-billion is needed to maintain roads to a safe standard in New South Wales – 10 per cent of that backlog is in the Hunter.
Lake Macquarie is facing a $93-million shorfall, while Maitland needs $67-million.
NRMA President, Kyle Loades, says last month’s devastating storm will also exacerbate the situation.
“Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives and the many more whose homes were lost or severely damaged in the recent storms,” he said.
“When the storm damage is repaired the problem of deteriorating local roads will remain unless councils are assisted. People will continue to be exposed to unsafe roads.”
The NRMA would like a greater portion of the fuel excise to be spent on roads, as well as the local government infrastructure backlog fund to be expanded.
