COUNCIL TO VOTE ON RAINBOW CROSSINGS

Newcastle City Council will tonight vote on a controversial motion to paint three pedestrian crossings in rainbow colours, as a symbol of marriage equality.

The motion has been put forward by Labor councillor Declan Clausen and would see three crossings in Hamilton and Newcastle transformed.

Liberal councillor Brad Luke believes it’s a waste of money and says the funds should be used to lower council’s infrastruture backlog instead.

But Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes says the project wouldn’t cost anything.
