SEA WORLD EVACUATED DURING SOUTHPORT SPIT FIRE

Sea World theme park on the Gold Coast has been evacuated after a large brush fire on the Southport Spit threatened the park.

Queensland Police declared an emergency situation in the area at 11:00am after Emergency services were called to the blaze about 9:45am.

Water-bombing helicopters were brought in to assist 13 ground crews during the peak of the fire.

Smoke from the blaze forced the evacuation of Sea World resort and a nearby recreational area as a precaution for a couple of hours.

The theme park and resort has since reopened.
