LAURIETON VETERAN AWARDED LEGION OF HONOUR

A 95-year-old Laurieton navy veteran has been awarded France’s highest military order, the Legion of Honour.

Graham Otley served for the Royal Navy during the D-Day landings in 1944, as a radio mechanic on a brigade headquarters ship.

“We arrived off the French coast about 6 O’clock in the morning, the troops went ashore, they were behind us in boats, all very sea sick,” he said.

Mr Otley later became a teacher in England, before migrating to the Mid North Coast with his wife.
