EXPECT POLICE TO BE OUT AND ABOUT DURING THE NEWCASTLE 500

Police are planning a high-visibility operation ahead of the Supercars event in Newcastle this weekend, in an effort to curb anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related violence.

Police will also focus on road safety during the inaugural Newcastle 500, with motorists urged to allow extra travel time due to heavy traffic, and to make smart decisions to avoid putting themselves and other road users at risk.

A spokesperson said speeding, drink-driving, mobile phone and seat-belt offences in particular will be targeted, in addition to random breath tests and roadside drug testing.

More than 150,000 spectators are expected in Newcastle this weekend, from Thursday through to next Monday.
