RED AND YELLOW ARMY ON HEIGHTENED ALERT AHEAD OF AUSTRALIA DAY

A hazardous surf warning was in place for much of the day along the Byron coast, even as hundreds of people flocked to the water.

It comes as lifeguards and lifesavers prepare for one of their busiest periods.
