In Newcastle, Merewether Beach was closed for several hours this morning after a possible shark sighting.
A local surfer reported seeing a large shadow in the water at around nine o’clock, before raising the alarm.
Lifeguards swept the water on jet-skis, but with no confirmed sightings, the beach was re-opened at lunchtime.
