Mining giant Glencore has announced plans to close two major Hunter mines in 2023, as the Swiss company works to transition to a “low carbon economy.”
The plan was put forward in a webcast with investors on Friday, during which CEO Ivan Glasenberg revealed he would be retiring early next year.
It could mean significant job losses – the Liddell open cut mine has a workforce of 397 people and Integra has 270.
A spokesperson for the company said its mining licence is due to expire in 2023.
