Northcliffe champion, Pierce Leonard’s surf life saving season is over. After pushing through the pain to become number one last year, the ironman has succumbed to a back injury. However, it could give one of his clubmates the chance to stand on the podium.

KURT GIDLEY CLEARED TO PLAY NRL SEASON
Rugby league breathed a big sigh of relief today, with two of its biggest names cleared of serious injuries following the All Stars game. Brisbane’s Darren Lockyer got the okay on an arm problem, while at Newcastle, Knights captain Kurt Gidley may only miss a few weeks of the season, at worst.

SPARKS EXPECTED TO FLY DURING REMATCH
The Gold Coast Blaze will take on NBL minor premiers, and arch rivals, the Perth Wildcats at the Cage on Thursday. Anthony Petrie is expected to be back on court, but the team will play the first round of the playoffs without guard Ayinde Ubaka.
