Nearly a dozen Combined High Schools AFL teams have fiercely contested the State Championships in Coffs Harbour this week. Organisers say players’ skill level and knowledge of the game across the board, is the best it’s ever been.

Newly crowned Queensland Ironman State Champion Finn Askew, is putting his body to the test again at this year’s Australian Titles. The South West Rocks athlete, getting straight back into competition after securing an impressive win on the Gold Coast.

Laurieton’s Bailey Whitton is closer to securing the Olympic Trial time for the 50 metre freestyle, after scoring a new personal best at the Australian Titles. Fellow swimmer Claire McIntosh, also celebrating after making the finals in the multi-class 50 backstroke.

In the much anticipated opening round of the Group 2 Rugby League season, Macksville’s Sea Eagles were too good for South Grafton, downing the Rebels by 26 points. The Ghosts outclassed the Magpies. And the Comets had a win over the Seahorses.

To rowing and Port Macquarie has taken out two podium finishes in the single scull at this weekend’s Edward Trickett New South Wales Grade Championship. It follows a string of medals for the club at this year’s Central District championship.

Blustery, southerly winds made tricky conditions for sailors taking part in today’s Coffs Coast sprint. The inaugural event drew single hull competitors from across the state.

17 games were played today, across men’s and women’s divisions, as part of the North Coast AFL’s pre-season competition. All eight senior men’s teams were in action, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come this year.
