Gunnedah’s English Sporting Championships kicked off today, with hundreds of clay targets taking to the sky. But, border closures kept competitor numbers down.

It’s not uncommon for shooting events at Gunnedah to attract top-level interstate competitors. But even border restrictions won’t stop this weekend’s English Sporting Championships from going ahead.  

The Tamworth Kangaroos face an enormous task on Saturday when they host the Gunnedah Bulldogs in North West AFL. But motivation shouldn’t be a concern for Tamworth, as they honour a former player and club president.  

The North West Regional Youth Rugby competition returns tomorrow night and they players can’t wait to get back on the field. The concept incorporates school teams as well as clubs, with all matches played under lights.  

Two Tamworth AFL teams have joined forces to see a combined junior side hit the field this season. The new club has seen an encouraging start, with strong numbers showing up for round one over the weekend.

The Flames came away with a two-nil win over the Olympians in round two of the women’s hockey on the weekend. The first-grade Tamworth sides battled it out on Sunday, with the Flames holding their one-point lead into half-time. Oxley Vale Attunga has maintained their spot at the top of the premier league ladder, even if it’s just on goal difference. The Mushies out-classed Moore Creek on Saturday with a six-nil win, thanks to a solid first-half effort.      

It’s not often the New England Nomads have more than 100-points scored against them, but that was the case on Saturday. The Tamworth Swans inflicting the damage, thanks mostly to Kaleb Crowhurst.  

The Tamworth Magpies started the New England rugby season on a high yesterday, hosting St Alberts College. Both the men’s and women’s side recorded wins in their first games back.
