The four Greater Northern Tigers squads departed Tamworth this morning for Lismore, where they’ll tackle Northern Rivers. It’ll be the women’s first competitive match of the competition.  

It’s regarded the world’s richest country race series, with 14 horses advancing through to the final on April 4 worth $500,000. To get there it starts with the Country Championships qualifiers, which hit Tamworth on Sunday.  

The Peel Valley Bush Cricket season wraps-up on Saturday, with Kootingal taking on Kingswood in the A-grade grand final. The decider will be played at Moore Creek – the new home of Kootingal cricket club.  

Northern Inland Football is giving junior players their first taste of what it’s like in the big league. This year, they’ve got four teams playing in Northern League One, which starts this weekend.  

With money tight in drought stricken communities, sport participation takes a hit. But this rugby season, the Tamworth Tri Colours will waive its registration and insurance fees, to help drought-stricken families continue putting their kids on the field.

Rugby League hopefuls hit the field today in Tamworth, with the region’s Catholic schools on the hunt for a new representative squad. The Diocese has struggled to attract the numbers lately, forcing it to combine forces with another region.

Hundreds of up-and-coming horse riders will pack AELEC over the weekend for the Tamworth International Eventing competition. The contest is now in its tenth year.

A sport and leisure expo will be held this Friday at the Tamworth Sports Dome, to help the city’s seniors stay active. From tennis to tai chi – there’ll be plenty of sports to choose from.

The Tamworth Athletics Centre has held various carnivals since its officially opening, late last year. But it got its first real test on the weekend – the centre hosting a crowd of thousands for the State Combined Events Carnival.  

Six-year-old mare ‘Concessions’ has won today’s Armidale Cup for trainer Scott Singleton. Today’s feature race meeting was the first held at the Armidale track in over six months, due to the impact of the drought.
