Two north-west schools have battled it out in a range of sports for their chance to win the Dick Hodgson Shield. Farrer Memorial High School is the defending champion, but they’ve been given a run for their money.  

A young Tamworth golfer has returned home from the North vs South Cup in Sydney, victorious. Hugh Duncan represented North on the green – the side winning their second title.

It’s time for the girls to take to the field in Tamworth, with Northern New South Wales Football introducing “Kick Off For Girls.” The brand-new program is aimed at budding players aged 4 to 9 years who want to try their foot at soccer.

North West rugby sevens player Rhiannon Byers is preparing to make her World Rugby Sevens Series debut for Australia. The former Warialda High school student has joined the team in Biarritz, ahead of the start of the competition next weekend. It comes after she signed a senior contract with Rugby Australia last month. (VISION ONLY)

In rugby union, talented players from all over the state will converge on Tamworth this long weekend, for the Country Championships. And for the first time in competition history, the women’s 15s will line up with the senior men.

To baseball now, and the annual long weekend carnival in Tamworth will be hotly contested. Queensland’s Interpol Masters have won the tournament every year for the last ten – but Tamworth’s out to topple them.

The Boggabri Roos struggled through last year’s Group 4 rugby league season without recording a single win. But at the weekend, the Roo’s bounced back, beating the Dungowan Cowboys by four points.  

They’ve already claimed a couple of big scalps within Central North Rugby. Wins by the Gunnedah Red Devils that haven’t gone unnoticed – their latest victory coming yesterday over Barraba-Gwydir.  

It was a whirlwind trip to Gunnedah for Shepparton’s Xavier Russell – topping the podium at this weekend’s shooting state championship. Competing against almost 100 shooters, the teenager triumphed over rivals four times his age.  

The annual long weekend carnival is now just a week away, so today, Tamworth baseball players had a final hit-out. The numbers for this carnival are slightly up on last year – which was the association’s 50th anniversary. A convoy of teams are travelling interstate to play. PLEASE NOTE: SOME AUDIO UNAVAILABLE.
