Water Polo may not be the most prominent sport in regional New South Wales, but Tamworth High School’s Mikayla Gross is defying the odds. The 17-year-old is one of a handful of players selected to compete in the Australian All Girls Championships in December.

The Northern Inland Premier League held it’s round five washout weekend, with the Demon Knights and Mushies drawing, while North Companions defeated Easts. In the other match – South Armidale bounced back from Saturday’s loss to beat Tamworth FC.  

Armidale siblings Holly and Michael Harris have taken out the mixed teams category, at this year’s Port-to-Port mountain bike race. It was another round of upsets in Group 19 rugby league, with the struggling Rams going down to Glen Innes. Meanwhile the Narwan Eels produced their second shock win in as many weeks – knocking over the defending premiers.  

The Inverell Saints recorded a massive win over the Kangaroos in North West AFL, with Lachie White kicking seven majors. It was a much tighter game between the Tamworth Swans and New England Nomads. Mixed results for the Tamworth Thunderbolts, with the men comfortably beating the Springwood Scorchers. Meanwhile the women’s Thunderbolts side went down to Coffs Harbour, in their first home game of the year.    

There’s a long way to go in the New England Rugby competition until grand final day in mid August. For St Alberts College to reach that point, it means getting their season back on track. Positive steps they took yesterday.  

In Central North Rugby Union, the Moree Bulls defeated the Brumbies by 58-points, as the Walcha Rams downed the Red Devils. In the other matches, Barraba-Gwydir beat the Inverell Highlanders While the Tamworth Pirates overcame a slow start against Narrabri. The West Tamworth Tennis Club has a proud history encouraging seniors to pick-up a ball and racquet. Today dozens did just that at the Club’s annual senior tournament – now in its 18th year.  

Tamworth will be well represented in Shepparton this weekend – when several of the region’s BMX riders take-part in the Australian National Championships.
