The junior country championships have long served as a rite of passage, helping players progress to higher honours. Rugby’s next generation will have their first opportunity this weekend as selection trials get underway.

The Greater Northern Tigers have posted mixed results in round one of the Andrew Johns Cup. The under-16s side won their first round match at Wyong’s Morry Breen Oval, beating the Central Coast Roosters 30 to 10. With the representative season fast approaching, today’s friendly hit-out at the Tamworth Sports Dome was just the hit-out needed. The trial matches also sparking an old rivalry, between the Tamworth Thunderbolts and Maitland Mustangs.
