The Newcastle Jets had a strong first hit out for the 2016-2017 A-League season against defending champions Adelaide United, with the result being a 1-1 draw. The home fans paid special tribute to former Jet, Bernardo Ribeiro, in the 10th minute, after he died in Brazil earlier this year.
