    It’s full steam ahead for the University of Newcastle’s new city campus, with a 100 tonne steel cube inserted on the building this morning. Traffic was brought to a standstill, as Hunter Street was blocked off for the cranes. It’s a significant milestone in the $95-million project.

    POLICE INVESTIGATING LAUNDROMAT FIRE

    Police are investigating the cause of a fire, which damaged a laundromat in Newcastle this morning. At around 2:30am, fire fighters were called to the business on Glebe Road at Merewether. Residents living above the laundromat were evacuated and treated on scene by paramedics. It’s believed the blaze may have started in a dryer.

    A train has derailed at a level crossing on Kooragang Island, closing Cormorant Road in both directions. Motorists are advised to expect delays, with heavy traffic heading towards Newcastle Airport. Diversions have been set up via Egret Street and Raven Street for Northbound traffic, and from Cabbage Tree Road to Tomago Road for Southbound traffic.
